SUMMARY:Frampton in Spring
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Nick Goatman\nOur first visit is for this year’s programme.  We’re very lucky to have Nick as our guide for the trip. He rarely strays far from Frampton\, which has been his local patch for around 20 years; he has recorded well over 200 birds here. \nIt’s got a great mix of habitats\, including two large lakes\, small reed beds\, hedgerows\, and farmland areas\, all of which should help us locate some great birds.  We typically see around 50 species of bird\, highlights might include: \n\nCommon and Lesser Whitethroat\nReed\, sedge and Willow Warbler\nDucks\, geese\nAll of the hirundines & swifts\n\nIt’s also a great time to see Hobby – our migratory raptor which congregates here for a couple of weeks before heading off to local areas to breed. \nWe’ll meet in the small car park at the bottom end of the green on the track to the sailing lake at 8.30am. It’s a flat gentle walk with largely well made paths. We should be out for around 2.5 hours. \nShantanu Kuveskar\, CC BY-SA 4.0\, Hobby

SUMMARY:Clifton Pits & Croome
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Jeanne Vitkowski\nA new site for our club – or certainly one we haven’t visited for a very long time!  Clifton Pits in Worcestershire\, England\, is a birdwatching hotspot located off the A38 south of Kempsey\, known for its main pit and surrounding smaller pits. \nIt is a noted birding location\, featuring species like Egyptian Geese\, Whimbrel\, Wood Sandpiper\, and Goosander.  I’ve personally visited Clifton Pits 3 times and have seen Black Tern\, Long-tailed Duck\, and two Lesser Scaup.  So it’s a bit of a magnet for rarer birds.   The walking is across fields and paths; it can be a bit muddy\, so walking boots are recommended.  There are a variety of habitats\,  farmland\, hedgerows in addition to the pits themselves. \nIf time and enthusiasm allow\, there may be an opportunity to visit nearby Croome\, a National Trust property with a breeding population of Nightingales\, which are becoming increasingly difficult to see in Gloucestershire. \nFor Clifton Pits access is via public footpaths\, with parking available near the gate. SUMMARY:Crabtree Hill & Woorgreens Lake
DESCRIPTION:Leader Amanda Sultan-Black\nGloucestershire is a blessed county if you’re a birdwatcher; it’s home to some of the UK’s standout birds.  The nightjar is a premier example of this; its appearance at dusk has led to many folktales about its nature. In days gone by\, they were referred to as “goatsuckers\, steming from an ancient belief that these nocturnal birds would sneak into barns at night and suckle milk from goats. This myth likely arose due to their habit of flying close to livestock while hunting for insects\, leading people to mistakenly associate them with harming the animals. Thier latinname Caprimulgus:  (capra = goat\, mulgere = to milk) remains as a nod to this mythical lineage. \nThese are target birds for this evening trip and Crabtree Hill is a local stronghold for these birds. \nBefore the main event well have time to take in some other delights.  We’ll Meet at 7.00 pm at the stone works on the B4234\, which is the road running parallel to Cannop Ponds from Parkend. We will have a walk looking for wildfowl and waterfowl (Mandarin\, Grebes\, Wagtails & Dipper) also woodland species such as Warblers\, Flycatchers and Redstart) Leaving around 8.00pm we will drive to another part of the forest for a walk looking for Nightjars\, Owls and Woodcock as the Nightjars will hopefully start churring around 9.00pm. \nWe’ll likely return to our cars after dark at around 10:0pm so bring a torch for the walk back. \nDûrzan cîrano\, CC BY-SA 3.0\, via Wikimedia Commons

SUMMARY:Martin Down and Salisbury Plain
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Simon Ashley\nMartin Down National Nature Reserve:\nOffers some of the finest chalk downland birding in southern England. June is prime time\, with breeding species in full song and the landscape alive with wildflowers. \nBirds to watch for: \n\nTurtle Dove – Sadly a bird in massive decline it’s estimated that the UK has lost 99% of it’s population since the 1960’s.  There are encouraging signs in Europe in revent years numbers have risen.  There’s an extensive feeding porgramme for them in the UK.  With any luck we might hear and see one on our visit.\nCorn Bunting — Look for males delivering their jangling\, key-rattling song from fence posts and tall stems\nSkylark — Constant song-flights overhead across the open grassland\nYellowhammer — “Little-bit-of-bread-and-no-cheese” ringing from scrubby edges\nLinnet — Flocks moving between seed heads\nStonechat — Perching prominently on gorse and scrub\nRed Kite and Buzzard — Soaring over the downs\nWhitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat — Active in hedgerows\n\nInsects and plants: \nCharles J. Sharp\, CC BY-SA 4.0\, Turtle Dove via Wikimedia Commons\nThe Adonis Blue butterfly is a real highlight — its electric-blue males fly low over the turf in warm sunshine.  We should also find Chalkhill Blues\, Marbled White\, and Dark Green Fritillaries. \nFor flowers\, the Burnt-tip Orchid is a specialty here\, alongside Fragrant Orchid\, Pyramidal Orchid\, Horseshoe Vetch (the Adonis Blue’s larval foodplant)\, and drifts of yellow Kidney Vetch. \nThe walk is in two parts – We’ll start at the High carpark and then move to the Lower carpark.  Both the walks we’ll do will be relatively flat and short. \nPart 2: Salisbury Plain\nA special treat on the way home will be a short driving loop of one of the none- shooty areas of Salisbury Plain\, chief target bird here is the Great Bustard – the worlds heaviest flying bird. They are trully as sight to see.  The recent re-introduction of these birds in a safe environment – means we’ve got an excellent chance of seeing them.  We’ll also keep an eyeout for some Plain specialites like Whinchat and Tree pipit.  Should be fun. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll leave Stroud 8:00am – to arrive at Matin Down around 10:00am
